Korea Railroad Corporation / Daejeon
The new official building for Korea Railroad and Korea Rail Network Authority, which were re-established in January 2005, marks the first step of new high-speed railway business as well as the new development of Daejeon.New development of the region_The unbalanced urban condition between the eastern and western regions centering Daejeon station will be solved through the new office building and district development plan to be reborn as a new city. Entrusted with a role of a landmark, the site connected with Eastern Square is the starting signal for regional development.

Beginning of a new railway project_To separate Korean National Railroad into Korea Railroad and Korea Rail Network Authority according to function means starting anew by reorganizing the culture of the entire railway business. It also implies the acceleration of high-speed railway business that makes the whole nationinto a one-day life zone and the firm establishment of its position as a subject of new railway business for unified Korea in consideration of future unification of South and North Korea.

Office building open to general public_It attempts to change from a usualclosed business facility that concerns the railroad only into a cultural facility that represents Daejeon. The passive public relation of railway business and facilities were connected to programs such as the great auditorium lobby and the observatory, maximizing the synergy effect and engraving the image of friendlier Korean Rail in the minds of people.

■ Design Concept Trans : Office building that proposes a new railway to the future the tower running in parallel with the railroad and the lower part of the building respectively mean the new urban context of Daejeon and replacement with the velocity of railway continuity. In other words, the high-rise tower connects the east with the west to create a strong visual axis, proposing the new possibility of the city. Also, the lower floors in parallel with the railroad show a varying speed according to its focal point, creating an ever-changing new office building.

Mebius Ring : Endless trace of wheels without limitation_The visual message of a Floating Railway presented from the 4th floor to 6th floor shows the will of transcend the trace of wheel and the limitation of the railway that is confined to the ground. A series of public programs, which is continued from East Square through the entry ramp in the south, PR center, the lobby of grand auditorium, snack bar and finally to the railway observatory, is integrated into Mobius Ring to express the continuous flow of the rail and symbolize the future transportation mode without limit.

Control : For the efficient control of Korean railroad, Korea Railroad and Korea Rail Network_ Authority should be separated while complementing each other. The Floating Railway links two straight and upright towers and at the same time is controlled by them. The two towers, which controls the contemporary and future transportation, support and connect the past(site) present(railway) future(Floating railway), and become a strong landmark of Daejeon.

  • Novartis Visitor Reception :

The Visitor Reception Building and Entrances are a key component of the transformation of Novartis' North American Headquarters, presenting a dynamic new gateway to the campus. As part of a comprehensive master plan by Vittorio Lampugnani which includes buildings by Rafael Viٌoly and Fumihiko Maki, the building emerges from the earth and includes a sequence of reception, orientation, and gathering spaces for the campus.

Situated along the perimeter of the campus, the Visitor Reception provides a legible point of arrival, creating an interface between public and private, open and secure, and landscape and architecture. Sited within a new campus landscape designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, the building slips laterally into the campus' perimeter fence to provide a secure, yet welcoming passage to receive guests.

Certified LEED Gold, the pavilion is perched beneath a split wing roof canopy that vaults above an enclosure of structural glass. A solar canopy at the parking area provides enough energy for the building to meet its 'energy neutral' production goal. The Visitor Reception embodies the spirit of technological innovation and sustainable vision of this innovative research institution.

Located on the perimeter of East Hanover pharmaceutical giant Novartis campus, the new visitor center marks the culmination of visitors who park here and continue their journey on a shuttle service management company. Designed by New York-based Weiss / Manfredi a steel scanning reception structure shelter roof, orientation, and event spaces that are enclosed by a bathroom equipped with panels Low-E insulated glass curtain wall to maximize natural light and views. Inside, a backbone of the columns supporting the roof articulated at its lowest point, give way to the sculptural ribs that define the ceiling plane. Low partitions say daylight entire volume, and all the energy for the building with LEED Gold certification is provided by a solar panel near the adjacent parking area is full.

Mateo Arquitectura / Office Building

In the surroundings of the city of Zeist, near Utrecht, the competition was about the need to increase in 25.000 sqm of office space the existing building. At the same time, the project had to solve the parking garage for 1000 cars so that to retrieve a green park.

This project addressed the need to increase the surface area of the existing building and recover the parkland in which it is set, while maintaining the relation between the construction and its setting. The result is a building that mimics its natural context, creating a visual and aesthetic harmony and integrating the existing building by making the most of its full potential.

The indoor space is designed to provide the flexibility required by contemporary corporate activity, offering spaces with multiple possibilities to allow workers to choose the place they work at all times according to their professional and personal needs. Work was also infused with a spirit of innovation at the service of sustainability, with systems of ventilation built into the false ceilings to filter outside air naturally and condition the various spaces.

Our proposals put forward three types of intervention: Clear all the land adjancent to the current building and construct a large underground car park and demolish various service pavilions. This would give way to the appearence of a large private park with no roadways, which would be the new context for the building. Part of the extension would be built on the inside of the large patio resulting from the current building, which would greatly improve internal communications and bring life to the centre which is currently too empty. The building would be made of reflective glass and floating stainless steel. Towards the outside and in keeping with the current building open shape, the new working areas would use the landscape created as a nearby exterior reference. They are repetitive glass buildings plus outside protective wood, corten steel cladding or canvas which would produce a textile warp in the cladding which supplements the glass reflecting abstraction.

The internal spaces supplement the usual working space areas with new communication and informal working areas, with a “La Rambla” longitudinal layout. The auditoriums, the restaurants… are special functions that make the unit far more complex than the typical office flexible characteristics and casual areas. This is explained by being the headquarters of a great multinational company. the inside area will, therefore, be very varied and different.

This represents major energy saving and frees the building of the tubes and machinery, which visually and acoustically interfere in the workers’ environment.
