Seoul National University Hospital Medical Mall

Seoul National University Hospital Medical Mall In Korea.
Seoul National University Hospital, a prestigious medical, research and education institution in South Korea, needed to add clinic space in their central hospital, the cornerstone of a campus that includes specialty hospitals, labs, research and education facilities. Because the existing campus was essentially at-capacity, there was virtually no space for a new vertical facility. Without the option to build up, our architects and engineers crafted a medical mall solution from the ground down.

Because the existing campus was essentially at-capacity, there was virtually no space for a new vertical facility. Without the option to build up, our architects and engineers crafted a medical mall solution from the ground down.
The design concept places most functions below the surface level and includes three floors of outpatient clinics, retail and support spaces and a three-level parking garage with a focus on flexibility, intuitive wayfinding, expandability. The mostly below-grade space was designed to feel light and natural through the inclusion of a courtyard and all-natural light via skylights. Natural materials, landscaping, water, light and air were included throughout the design to provide a connection to nature.

As the project would connect to many other hospitals on site, designers also took care to understand the relationships and circulation paths between the different buildings. The team's consideration of the site's overall plan, the importance of pedestrian traffic, and how the campus might change in the future, ultimately created a stronger connection between all campus functions.

This project transforms the current on-site pavement and creates a park-like setting for patients and visitors in the midst of this bustling city of over 10 million people. The design considers the quality of the outdoor space and seeks to suffuse natural elements, light and air, to be used not only by the clinics, but also viewed and experienced by the surrounding facilities.

Seoul National University Hospital Medical Mall
The challenge for this project was providing a design that met the local FAR restrictions (which limits adding above-grade space), while keeping patients oriented to their location on the site. The unique underground exterior space helps orient patients and staff to their location on the site. From there, they are directly connected to the clinics, retail space, underground parking garages, and public transportation systems. This provides optimum convenience to sick and distressed patients who are visiting this large urban campus.

Developed by evgeny markachev + julia kozlova, the public library proposal implents the use of the philosophical ‘yin and yang’ sign as the form driver of the structure, symbolizing two different origins through interaction and complementarity.

perspective Project public library in Ying Yang
The concept obtains not only the shape of the motif, but also spatially divides the space into two opposite functional nodes that complement each other (education and communication).
Due to the dynamic form the edifice is visually in constant movement, designating the other zones to be harmoniously distributed in the internal areas of the building.
This feature reflects the modern intensity and information interchange, dynamics of modern life.

The upper storeys have exits to the terraces. A new walking direction is formed through the facility by the terraces that passes diagonally between the streets.

A large museum garden is requested. To realize that, we have looked for more building space elsewhere. A roundabout gives the possibility to design a landmark with long distance views and over 10.000 sq.m. garden.

The museum garden

The museum garden must be very green and large. It can be very green, if there is enough water: the cistern. By planning the building on the far east site of the plot, in the basement and on the roundabout, the garden will be over 10.000 sq. m. There is not a complete specification for the museum garden, therefore the design is indicative.
The service and maintenance building is on the far west end of the plot with its own entrance in the university campus.

Water management

Project National Science Museum, Sana’a, Yemen
museum garden - cistern

To ensure there is sufficient water for a green museum garden we planned a cistern (also the foundation of phase 2). In the Netherlands it rains 8000 mm/ year. We used this known fact to provide a green garden in Sana’a.
For one year a garden of 10.000 sq. m. needs a water reserve of 8000 m3. A cistern of 4000 sq. m. and 2 meters of water level will satisfy.
The cistern can be sponsored separately

During phase 1, the architectural form of phase 2 is represented by large trees in pots. The building and the trees form an architectural unity. In phase 2 these trees can be removed to the garden
